A Visit To The Hat Museum

This past Saturday I invited my friends over to my house to get dressed up in hats.
With our heads bedecked in fabulous hats we headed over to Pix Patisserie and had champagne and dessert.
Afterwards we went to The Hat Museum where we were lead around on a tour by the museum's owner/curator Alyce.
We had lots of fun!
If you ever find yourself in Portland, I would definitely recommend that you take your own trip to The Hat Museum as well as to Pix Patisserie !

Isabella Blow & Feather Hats

     Isabella Blow- the modern style icon, passed away earlier this month.
    She was best known for the whimsical hats that she sported everywhere.
    The majority of her hats were designed by Philip Treacy.
    In 2002 their relationship was highlighted in an exhibition titled "When Philip met Isabella" which featured sketches and photographs of Isabella wearing Philip's designs.
     A book of the same title was released in March of 2003.

    Fashioning jewelry out of human hair began back in the 1700's.
    Hair jewelry reached it's peak of popularity in the 1800's during the Victorian era.
    To make hair jewelry people would use locks of their own hair or a loved ones hair to braid and weave.
    These sentimental pieces of jewelry were made as remembrance and mourning jewelry as well as a token of affection for a loved one.

    Even though this belt is from the 60's it definitely has an 80's New Wave look to it!

Vintage Rene Gruau Swatch Watch

    Technically I wouldn't consider the watches that I am writing about today to be vintage (I consider something to be vintage once it's twenty years old or older).
    But, these watches are very interesting and highly collectible!
    Swatch watches first went on sale in 1983. And what made them different from what was on the market at the time was that Swatches were made out of plastic and featured only 51 components in the making of the watch rather than the usual 91 parts.
    Swatches hit their peak of popularity in the late 80's and early 90's. When they were the must have accessory. With their relative affordability compared to other watches it was common for people to own several different styles.
    If you are a Swatch fanatic you can join their club. When you join the club you receive a "Surprise Swatch" from their Originals Collection.
    When my husband and I were in Switzerland we were surprised to find out that Swatch doesn't have a cool watch museum or factory that you can tour. We found this to be incredibly surprising since their watches are all about fun and design. So, you would imagine that they would have a really great museum you could make a pilgrimage to! (Speaking of cool jewelry museums you have to check out Swarovski's Kristallwelten in Austria)
    For today's posts I have found three great Swatch watches to share with you.
    Take for instance the one pictured above.
    This watch is from 1992 and was designed by the renowned fashion illustrator Rene Gruau.
    The watch features illustrations of fashionable ladies on the face and wristbands.

Baiser D'Antan 1992 Swatch

    An artfully done watch in gold, black and white.
    The watch face has a graphic of a man kissing a woman's hand.
    The wristband features teacups, teapot, cursive writing, records, and a woman's face.
    My favorite detail of the watch is that the holes where you fasten it are streaming down from the woman's eye like tears.
    This watch has a Starting bid of $25- and there are 4 days left on it's sale over on ebay.

Vintage Art Deco Face Powder Box

    Yesterday I got the idea for today's blog entries- face powder boxes.
    So, I began my search and came across such a stunning collection of face powder boxes and myriad of other such wonderful vanity items that I decided to have all the entries be from the same website.
    That website is Vanity Treasures. The website's proprietress, Dawn has an incredibly vast collection of treasures for your vanity!
    Take for instance the chic and glamorous Art Deco delight pictured above.
    This 1926 face powder box features an incredible graphic of a flapper who is half in the light and half in the shadow. Behind her are wonderful Art Deco stylized spotlights.

Vintage Gaby Deslys Face Powder Box

    This early 1900's Po D'Arroz face powder box features Gaby Deslys in an exotic costume.
    Gaby Deslys was a famous French music hall performer. She appeared in the Follies Berges and even created her own style of dance.

Charming Encharma Face Powder Tin

    A lovely blonde sitting amongst red and yellow flowers with a wonderful shade of blue as the background.

Petite Art Nouveau Purse

    My husband and I just got back from our honeymoon in Europe.
    While there we visited two countries that have renowned collections of Art Nouveau buildings and artifacts...Austria and Belgium.
    Austria's Art Nouveau movement was known as the Vienna Secession and included the art of Gustav Klimt and the architecture of Otto Wagner.
    And the highlight of Belgium Art Nouveau was Victor Horta.
    Today I have found some Art Nouveau accessories to share with you.
    Take for instance the beautifully designed petite purse pictured above.
    The purse measures a mere 2 1/2 by 3 1/2 inches yet it houses a mirror, a lidded place for makeup and has room for change!

    This is such a lovely perfume bottle!
    The bottle is in the shape of a heart, has a pearl lustre to it and is hand painted with gold decoration.

    A delightful little Sterling Silver stamp safe!

Victorian Gold Garter Bracelet

    This 14K gold mesh bracelet has a unique buckle clasp that has approximately .75 carats in garnets decorating it.
    In the 60's and 70's there was a revival of this style of belt bracelet in costume jewelry. I have one made of silver metal and another one made of golden metal. They are a lot of fun, I always enjoy buckling them onto my wrists.
