Lulu's Vintage Blog: The Kohler Arts Center & The Kohler Design Center

The day we went to The John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan, Wisconsin was the day that they were celebrating the 10th birthday of an addition to the building. In celebration they were showing a movie about outsider artists, having artists talks, serving cake, and had areas set up where you could paint your own vase or make your own crown. In the galleries they had an exhibit titled American Story. This exhibit featured the works of fifteen different artists. Among our favorite exhibits were David Lenz's incredible paintings of urban and country scenes that looked like photographs, Adolph Vandertie's carved and whittled objects, and Xenobia Bailey's vibrantly colored crocheted works. Besides the art in the galleries, the Kohler Arts Center is also known for their artistic bathrooms, it was in one of the ladies rooms that I met Xenobia Bailey. I headed into the restroom to take photos of the walls and the stalls and then stopped in my tracks when I saw the beautifully outfitted Xenobia. It was quite a treat to be able to talk with her a bit! Before Chris and I left the museum we wandered around outside looking at the artwork on display on the grounds of the museum.

Next we headed over to The Kohler Design Center located nearby in Kohler. On display on the main level there were oodles of sinks, toilets, tubs etc... On the upper level there were "Designer Rooms" where lavish bathrooms and kitchen were on display, in the lower level there were vintage Kohler fixtures and advertisments.
