Alex Jordan's The House On The Rock in Wisconsin

Chris remembered visiting The House on the Rock in Wisconsin on a road trip with his family when he was a kid (his family visited all of the lower 48 states when he was a child). He didn't remember specifics but, he knew we had to go there on our road trip to Wisconsin. When I saw photos of it on the internet and read about it I couldn't wait to visit. Nothing that I had read or seen in photos could have prepared me for the incredibly wacky, over the top, flamboyant experience that is The House on the Rock!

The House on the Rock is situated where else but on a rock (the house is located above Spring Green where there are lots of Frank Lloyd Wright buildings). We were lucky enough to have visited the house when there were hardly any other people there. Most of the time it was just the two of us exploring the various rooms and attractions. There are three different sections that you can tour:

Section 1 is The Gate House and The Original House. The house is dimly lit and outfitted with all sorts of carpet covered lounge areas, and fireplaces...it's the swingiest bachelor pad I've ever seen (if you have ever been to the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo, CA this place is similar but on a much loungier scale). Towards the end of the tour of the Original House is The Infinity Room, which stretches out from the main building 218 feet, is 156 feet over the ground, and is lined with 3,264 windows. You can't walk all the way down to the end of the point, you can only go about two-thirds of the way down. At this point they have a window that you can look through down to the forest and rock below.

Section 2 was our favorite section of the tour. This part of the tour had us completely immersed in the intriguing uniqueness of the House on the Rock from the slightly eerie Streets of Yesterday, to the fascinatingly entertaining Music of Yesterday section, to the enormous Carousel.

Our favorite part of Section 3 was The Circus Room.

There are no words that can truly describe the kitschy and wacky experience of The House on the Rock, and our photos, because of the dim lighting, don't do the place justice. But, here we go...I am going to span out photos of The House on the Rock over a week's time (Make sure to click on the photos for larger views)...
